NEP Mine 2026 Training Learnerships: Monthly Stipend Available for SA Youth

Northam Eland Platinum Mine has officially opened applications for its 2026 Learnerships and Internships in Mining, Engineering, Geology and related fields. These programmes aim to support unemployed youth and graduates seeking technical qualifications and workplace exposure within South Africa’s mining industry.

Mining Sector Expands Skills Pipeline with New NEP 2026 Learnerships

The North West-based operation, known for its modern mining methods and strong focus on long-term skills development, continues to invest in building artisan and technical talent through structured training pathways.

Applications close on 14 December 2025, and placements will be based in Brits, Hartbeespoort, and Pretoria.


Programme Overview: 36-Month Learnership Track

The learnerships run over 36 months, guiding candidates from foundational learning to fully competent artisan level. Learners will undergo:

  • Theoretical classroom modules

  • Hands-on practical training at operational sites

  • Skills progression toward an accredited trade qualification

This combination ensures strong technical grounding and industry exposure.


Available Learnership Fields & Reference Numbers

Applicants may apply for one of the following artisan trades:

  • Diesel Electrical Fitter – Ref: DEF04

  • Heavy Equipment Mechanic – Ref: HEM04

  • Auto Electrician – Ref: AUT04

  • Plater/Welder – Ref: PLT04

Each field follows a structured path to produce workplace-ready artisans capable of supporting the mine’s operational teams.


Minimum Requirements for Learnerships

To qualify, applicants must have:

Academic Requirements

  • Completed N2 subjects, or

  • NCV Level 4 with seven subjects, or

  • A qualification not lower than Grade 12

Additional Requirements

  • Minimum E-symbol (40%) in relevant subjects

  • Good behavioural and attendance record

  • Medical Certificate of Fitness

  • Willingness to follow mine safety and compliance procedures

  • Must meet the organisation’s Employment Equity considerations

Mandatory Subjects (Depending on trade)

  • Mathematics (Not Mathematical Literacy)

  • Engineering Science

  • Engineering Drawing

  • Applicable Trade Theory

  • Diesel Trade Theory

  • Electrical Trade Theory

  • Plater/Welder Trade Theory


12-Month Internship Programme for Graduates

Northam Eland Platinum Mine is also offering a 12-month internship for graduates who require workplace exposure to complete their qualifications.

This programme is open to internal and external candidates depending on the discipline.


Available Internship Fields & Ref Numbers

  • Mining (Internal & External) – Ref: MIN04

  • Mine Ventilation (Internal & External) – Ref: MIV04

  • Mechanical/Electrical Engineering (External) – Ref: ENG04

  • Geology (Internal) – Ref: GEO04

Interns will receive structured mentorship, project involvement and hands-on experience aligned with their academic field.


Minimum Internship Requirements

Educational Requirements

  • Grade 12 Certificate

  • National Diploma or Degree (NQF 6 or 7) in:

    • Mining

    • Mechanical Engineering

    • Electrical Engineering

    • Geology (BSc)

Additional Conditions

  • Need for workplace training or exposure

  • No previous internship participation

  • Medical Certificate of Fitness


Internship Responsibilities

Interns will be expected to:

  • Gain hands-on work experience within their specialised field

  • Support technical teams on operational tasks

  • Participate in professional development activities

  • Commit to the full duration of the programme
