Mr Thomas Baloyi, Deputy Chief Education Specialist in the DBE’s Education Management and Governance Development Directorate, confirmed that PEDs are adopting a multi-platform outreach strategy to ensure parents are informed about application deadlines and processes.

- Northern Cape: Applications usually open in April and close in May for the following academic year.

“The comfort of a school of choice is no longer available at late application stage. Late applicants are offered placement at the first available school, preferably close to their homes.”
This rule ensures fairness and efficient placement while managing capacity constraints.
Nearly 2 Million Applications Received for 2026
By 30 September 2025, provinces had submitted updated statistics showing:
- 1,989,464 new applications for Grades R, 1 and 8
- 1,578,115 learners already placed
- Remaining applications still being processed
Gauteng, a high-pressure province due to continuous in-migration, began its formal placement process for Grades 1 and 8 on 16 October 2025.
Provinces will continue updating the DBE with placement progress through:
- Late October
- November
- Early December
- January 2026 (weekly reporting once schools reopen)
Migration Trends Continue to Affect Planning
National population trends again pose a challenge for admissions planning. Statistics South Africa has highlighted consistent migration patterns, especially:
- Movement from rural provinces to Gauteng
- Growth in the Western Cape due to internal migration
These shifts make it difficult to reliably predict learner numbers for the next academic year.
Mr Baloyi noted:
“This negatively influences planning by provinces as the absolute number of learners to be expected in the new year cannot be confirmed.”
Provinces will continue monitoring application requests and adjusting capacity where possible.

The DBE continues urging parents to apply early each year to secure placement at schools of their preference. Early applications allow:
