For many engineering students, completing N6 studies is only part of the journey toward obtaining a National Diploma. The next challenge is often finding workplace placement opportunities required to complete practical training requirements.
To help address this challenge, Ikhala TVET College, in partnership with Energy and Water SETA (EWSETA), has announced 30 Engineering In-Service Training opportunities for qualifying students.
The programme is specifically designed for Ikhala TVET College students who have successfully completed their N6 studies and require workplace exposure to complete their diploma qualifications.
Applications opened on 9 June 2026 and will close on 23 June 2026 at 16:30.
A Critical Step Towards Diploma Completion
Across South Africa, thousands of engineering students complete their theoretical studies each year but struggle to find workplace placements.
Without practical training, students cannot satisfy the requirements needed to obtain their National Diplomas, leaving many qualified learners unable to formally complete their studies.
The Ikhala TVET College Engineering In-Service Training Programme seeks to bridge this gap by creating structured workplace learning opportunities for eligible engineering students.
For many participants, the programme could become the final step needed before qualifying for their diplomas and pursuing employment opportunities in the engineering sector.
Why Workplace Training Matters
Engineering qualifications are designed to combine classroom learning with practical industry experience.
While N4 to N6 studies provide technical knowledge, workplace exposure helps students:
- Apply engineering principles in real environments
- Develop industry-relevant skills
- Gain practical experience
- Improve employability
- Build professional networks
- Understand workplace safety procedures
Employers often value candidates who can demonstrate both theoretical knowledge and practical competence.
As a result, workplace learning remains an essential component of engineering training.
Engineering Fields Available
The programme is open to students who completed N6 studies in the following disciplines:
Civil Engineering
Students may gain exposure to construction, infrastructure development, project support, and engineering operations.
Electrical Engineering
Participants may develop practical experience in electrical systems, maintenance, installations, and technical support environments.
Mechanical Engineering
Learners may receive workplace exposure involving machinery, maintenance systems, production environments, and engineering processes.
Applicants should ensure that their field of study matches one of the qualifying disciplines before applying.
Who Can Apply?
The opportunity is exclusively available to students from Ikhala TVET College.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be registered as an Ikhala TVET College student
- Have successfully completed N6 studies
- Require workplace placement to complete diploma requirements
- Be studying within one of the approved engineering disciplines
- Submit all required documentation before the closing date
Students who have already completed workplace training or do not require placement for diploma completion may not be considered.

Career Benefits of In-Service Training
Completing workplace training can provide significant advantages beyond diploma completion.
Participants may benefit from:
- Practical engineering experience
- Exposure to industry operations
- Professional mentorship
- Improved technical competencies
- Enhanced employability
- Networking opportunities within the engineering sector
Many employers regard workplace experience as one of the most valuable components of an engineering qualification.
Expert Insight
South Africa continues to face a shortage of technical and engineering skills in several sectors of the economy. Programmes that connect students with workplace training opportunities play an important role in strengthening the country’s future workforce.
For engineering students who have already completed N6 studies, practical placement opportunities such as this one can significantly improve career prospects while helping learners satisfy diploma requirements.
As competition for engineering opportunities remains strong, applicants should ensure their CVs clearly highlight technical skills, academic achievements, and career interests.
